Actress-activist Shabana Azmi is doing a play named 'Harold Pinter's Betrayal', opposite two of New York Broadway's well-known names - two-time Tony Award nominee Peter Friedman (Paycheck) and Simon Jones (Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy) in Singapore. Playing the character of Emma, who has had a taste of forbidden love, she finds herself torn between two men - her husband and her lover. Betrayal, directed by Singaporean Chinese director Meiyin Yang, is Pinter's most celebrated work about a woman's illicit relationship with her husband's best friend.
Shabana is on a seven-week sojourn with the Singapore Repertory Theatre, says, "I am having a ball of time here even though we have been rehearsing daily from 10 am to 4 pm. Each day is a new experience for me. I am learning how to interrupt a pause with a dialogue. The English actors just get on with their jobs but the Americans love to anguish over their parts. They are such method actors. It makes you realize just how much they put in to their roles."
