Sadhu Agashe (Nana Patekar) has killed fifty-six people so far in his career as an encounter specialist. To him killing is a job just like any other work assigned to him. Sadhu is witty and philosophical and does anything that is ordered to him without the least bit of pricking conscience. Though the film mainly centres on 'encounter' it also had another facet and that is the inter-departmental tug-of-war between the junior and the senior officers. Sadhu works for a department that has to deal with the task of gunning down the criminals. To slay one gangster is not a piece of cake for them how hard an encounter cop has to work and what are the various difficulties he has to upsurge and how all this affects his personal life can be seen in Ab tak 56.

This film is set in the teaming metropolis Mumbai and revolves around the Crime Branch of Mumbai police, set up to weed out the increasing organized crime from the city.

Accused wrongly of crime Sadhu Agahse now becomes a fugitive from the country. What unveils from here forms the climax of the film.
