Gangaajal

From the cupboard of hard-hitting director Prakash Jha comes another movie. This time it's an attempt to cleanse the society from crime with GANGAJAAL. Set in the locales of Bihar, just like MRITYUDAND it talks about the petty crimes of the society that people are involved in. A crusade of a cop to cleanse the society of evil, the film has the tagline of 'The Holy Weapon'. There were some rumours going that Subhash Ghai had coined the script but seeing the promos one can identify easily a Prakash Jha film.

By the river Ganga lies the imaginary district town of Tejpur in Bihar. Amit Kumar [Ajay Devgan] is the new Superintendent of Police.

Amit is an honest cop, he finds Tejpur throttled with corruption, injustice and goondaraj. He sets upon the task of restructuring the police department and some of the policemen too respond positively to his efforts. They find that the weeds of corruption are too strong to uproot. There are policemen who strongly go by the law book and others who believe that following what is termed as legal could do nothing.

The desire to throw away the corruption is so strong that when nothing works they take resort to newly found weapon. And very soon the society that was suppressed for so long finds utterance through this weapon to seek revenge and justice. Amit finds himself at crossroads as his conscience is left hovering between his moral and social duty.

The ordinary citizen is suddenly empowered, but dangerously. Soon the lines become blurred - what is right? What is just? Amit finds himself in a dilemma. His wife, Anuradha (Gracy Singh), acts as his conscience keeper. She is deeply pained by what is happening around her and questions him every step of the way. Amit, disturbed and frustrated, withdraws from her.

On the whole, Gaagajaal is a gritty, hard-hitting film based on the police force.

Gangaajal is scheduled to release on August 29th, 2003.
