Madhoshi

Madhoshi, which forms the directorial debut of Tanveer Khan, is the first Bollywood film in which the September 11th attacks form the backdrop.

During the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Centre, Anu's elder sister and her brother-in-law are killed. This shocks Anu to the hilt. She goes into depression.

Concerned about her problem, Anu's parents decide to get her engaged to Arpit Oberoi (Priyanshu Chatterjee) who works as a filmmaker. But Arpit's work soon takes him to America leaving Anu on her own for a short while.

All alone and bored, Anu meets Aman ( John Abraham ). He is a member of an anti-terrorist organisation. Believing in Aman's aim in life, she falls in love with him. But when the time comes to tie the knot with Arpit, she declines the proposal. Anu even becomes suicidal in the process. She is diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia. How Anu tries to overcome her sickness and how she deals with the two men in her life forms the climax of this melodramatic love triangle.

The storyline is new. And that is one plus point of the film. But the treatment is typical of what you see in B-grade Bollywood flicks. Never mind that the producer has roped in top stars to act in the film, but the film does is no way depict the reality of the tragedy, the pathos and the pain of the relatives of the victims of the 9/11 catastrophe.

Debutante director Tanveer Khan [also the writer of the film] seems to have opted for an interesting story and has developed it well till two-thirds of the film, but messes it up completely in the last part. And that is the biggest flaw of the film.

Roop Kumar Rathod's music is pleasant. The film has a couple of hummable tunes, notable among them being 'O Jaane Jaana', 'Pyar Ka Khumar' and 'Yeh Ishq Hai Gunaah To'. Cinematography [Damodar Naidu] is serviceable.

MADHOSHI belongs to Bipasha Basu completely. She is outstanding in the hospital sequences specifically. John Abraham proves yet again that he's amongst the gifted actors around. Shweta Tiwari [Tabassum - Bipasha's friend] is excellent. Smita Jaykar, Rajiv Verma, Anang Desai and Vikram Gokhale are adequate. Priyanshu does not fall flat on his face with those tricky dance steps, and has matured as an actor.

On the whole, MADHOSHI takes recourse in the tried and the tested Bollywood formula of imitating several Hollywood scripts.
