The much awaited "Naach" by Ram Gopal Varma is about two young people struggling for name and fame in the maniacal frenzy of Hindi filmdom.
Abhi (Abhishek Bachchan) is an aspiring actor and Rewa (Antara Mali) a wannabe choreographer in the film that is said to be inspired by Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai's "In The Mood For Love".
Rewa and Abhi are both trying to get a foothold in the industry. Abhi is lucky to get a break, while Rewa is shown the door since the lead actress wants her fav choreographer in the film. Things reach a stage where Abhi and Rewa go separate ways due to ideological differences
Abhi becomes a big star, while Rewa continues with her struggle. She finally manages the big break when a music company boss, Diwakar [Ritesh Deshmukh], offers her a video, as an actress. There's no looking back, Rewa becomes famous overnight.
Music is quite appealing and the picturization of at least three tracks is fantastic - 'Naach Naach Ke' [music: Shailendra Swapnil], 'Bandhne Lagi' [music: Amar Mohile] and 'Sara Sara' [music: Amar Mohile]. Cinematography [Kiran Reddy] is fabulous. The locations in the 'Bandhne Lagi' track are simply breath-taking. Choreography [Raoul & Maitria, Shabina Khan, Terrence Lewis, Harshall-Vitthal] is excellent.
Overall, the look and feel of the film is 'New Age'. The blend of Antra's yogic postures with Western dance; queer make-up; ghetto pub culture; the unkempt, Rasta hair; carefully crafted body piercing and tattoos; along with intricate body painting are just a few examples you shouldn't miss. If Manish Malhotra started the trend of psychedelic colours and dressed Urmila Matondkar in flamboyant short dresses resembling petticoats, Gavin Miguel has a curious asymmetrical unrealistic style. If you want to follow Miguel's trend then drop an earring, lose a pair of socks, wear striped stockings and don't forget to add feathers and horns on your head!
Antara's body show could be a draw for the front benchers, but the film is not entirely for them. Abhishek Bachchan is the best of the lot. His performance is stunning especially in emotional and intense scenes. Ritesh Deshmukh surprises with a serious and intense role. He has an ugly looking stubble/beard which takes away the innocence in his face, but it suits the character well. Ram Gopal Varma stuns you as a different filmmaker at times crossing an Abhimaan (Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri) with his won Rangeela (Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar).
